Responding to Uncommon Valor: MFTs Serving Military Families
CE Credits: 1.00 Speaker(s): Frank N. Thomas, PhD; Michael D. Howard, EdD Public support of US military personnel has always transcended politics. But the costs to those who serve in uniform are often high, and the effects of war, deployment, and separation from families and communities are extensive. In this plenary, Drs. Frank Thomas and Michael Howard examine the military culture and its distinctive structure and language. The focus of their exchanges will also address the physical, emotional, moral, and relational injuries military personnel experience and how MFTs can effectively respond. Finally, conversation will center on how MFTs as systems thinkers are uniquely qualified to positively impact military personnel and their families beyond the therapy room as healing influences in the community in addition to those seeking services.

Special Education and Student Achievement: A Systemic Lens
CE Credits: 1.50 Speaker(s): Kathleen C. Laundy, PsyD Participants will be introduced to the value of systemic training as it relates to special education. Participants will learn about individual, family, school, community and cultural influences that can affect students with special needs over time. A model called the Longitudinal Overview of Growth in Systems (LOGs) will be employed to help guide assessment and understanding of the wide range of services that MFTs can provide to administrators, teachers, students and families in schools. Systems trained therapists provide a context-rich set of services to special education school teams, and can offer continuity to schools, students and their families across time. Early systems-based support can more comprehensively identify students in need, build needed social and emotional services to boost student resiliency, and can prevent out-of-district placements and other costly outcomes.

CE Credits: 1.50 Speaker(s): Tai J Mendenhall, PhD; Cathy M. Hudgins, PhD; Randall S. Reitz, PhD When gaining employment in a healthcare setting, it is important to know which positions to apply for, how to get past the human relations/search committee chairpersons who do not understand the scope of practice and reimbursement opportunities for MFTs, and have the self-confidence required to speak to one's training and expertise. Experienced MFTs will share with attendees a series of tips and strategies for getting past the barriers that have historically challenged all behavioral health disciplines, but MFTs particularly.

The National Framework for Safe and Successful Schools
CE Credits: 2.00 Speaker(s): Kathleen C. Laundy, PsyD; Barbara S. Bennett, MS; Peg Donohue Following an escalation of violence in American schools, a national consortium of professionals from various mental health disciplines developed A Framework for Safe and Successful Schools in 2013. This includes different manners in which the mental health access can be integrated into school settings. They will explain the collaborative roles school-based MFTs, counselors, psychologists and social workers play to build mental health teams of support across elementary, middle and high schools in urban, suburban and rural schools. MFTs are the newest mental health professionals to join school-certified mental health teams, and this workshop will highlight the complimentary skill set they bring to collaborative health care practice in education.

The Role of Expertise: Early-Career Family Therapists
CE Credits: 2.00 Speaker(s): Benjamin E. Caldwell, PsyD; Torri Y. Efron Family therapy educators have moved from encouraging new therapists to take an expert stance with clients. While helpful for working with marginalized groups, this places therapists in a difficult position when clients expect expert advice. This workshop will discuss expertise among early-career MFTs, offering specific guidance on when and how to demonstrate expertise without alienating clients or sacrificing cultural competency.
